Interstellar dust and magnetic field at the boundaries of the Local Bubble Analysis of polarimetric data in the light of Hipparcos parallaxes

چکیده

Hipparcos stellar parallaxes have been used to reanalyse existing interstellar polarization data. The main results are: – The nearest interstellar dust patches are at about 70 pc in some directions, in others beyond 150 pc. Thus the region devoid of dust, commonly identified with the Local Hot Bubble, is irregular in shape. – The interstellar magnetic field revealed by the nearest polarized stars is certainly not a smooth, uniform field along the Galactic equator. The structure seen is more complex and can no longer be dismissed as an artefact due to inaccurate stellar distances.

Interstellar reddening from the Hipparcos and Tycho catalogues II. Nearby dust features at the NGP associated with approaching HI gas

The Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues offer an interesting possibility to study the local distribution of the interstellar reddening from the combination of data contained in the catalogues: Hipparcos parallaxes, Tycho B − V and spectral and luminosity classification compiled from the literature, mainly the Michigan Catalogs. In some cases the distances to intermediate velocity (IV) gas features m...

Interstellar Dust and Magnetic Field at the Heliosphere

The very weak polarization of light from nearby stars reaches a maximum near the ecliptic plane in a position offset by λ ∼ 35 from the heliosphere nose direction. The position angle for the polarization in this ecliptic-plane peak is the same for near and distant stars, to within uncertainties, indicating the interstellar magnetic field direction is relatively constant over several hundred par...

The Local Bubble, Local Fluff, and Heliosphere

The properties of the Local Bubble, Local Fluff complex of nearby interstellar clouds, and the heliosphere are mutually constrained by data and theory. Observations and models of the diffuse radiation field, interstellar ionization, pick-up ion and anomalous cosmic-ray populations, and interstellar dust link the physics of these regions. The differences between the one-asymmetric-superbubble an...

The properties of interstellar matter at the Sun are regulated by our location with respect to a void in the local matter distribution, known as the Local Bubble. The Local Bubble (LB) is bounded by associations of massive stars and fossil supernovae that have disrupted dense interstellar matter (ISM), driving low density intermediate velocity ISM into the void. The Sun appears to be located in...
